7 Gallons
- Fill the 5 gallon jug and then empty it into the 3 gallon jug.
- Empty the 3 gallon jug out and then replace it with the remaining two gallons from the 5 gallon jug
- Refill the 5 gallon jug. Both jugs now contains a total of seven gallons
4 Gallons
- Fill the 3 gallon jug and then empty it into the 5 gallon jug.
- Repeat the procedure above. There should be one gallon left in the 3 gallon jug that will not fit.
- Empty the 5 gallon jug out and pour the remaining one gallon from the 3 gallon jug
- Refill the 3 gallon jug. Both jugs now contains a total of four gallons
